Shooting Emotion: Our Experience with the Canon R5 Mark II on a Narrative Ad Film
The film follows a single mother rediscovering her passion for photography on her daughter’s wedding day, an intimate, emotionally driven narrative. This meant every visual choice had to feel honest, unobtrusive, and close to the character.

When you’re telling a story built on subtle emotion, the camera can’t get in the way. It has to disappear. For this film, the Canon R5 Mark II became more than a tool,it became part of the storytelling process.
CINEMATOGRAPHER’S PERSPECTIV
The biggest advantage was flexibility. The camera allowed us to move quickly between controlled and spontaneous moments especially during performance heavy scenes.
Skin tones felt natural, and the dynamic range helped retain detail in both highlights and shadows, which was crucial for maintaining a soft, cinematic look.
Its compact form factor also helped in keeping the setup minimal, allowing actors to stay immersed without the pressure of a large rig.
DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE
As a director, the priority is always performance. The less the camera intrudes, the more authentic the moment feels.
The Canon R5 Mark II allowed us to stay close to the actors, capturing nuanced expressions without breaking the emotional rhythm of the scene.
It gave us the confidence to focus on the story rather than technical limitations.
COLORIST’S PERSPECTIVE
In post, the footage offered a flexible starting point. There was enough information to shape the mood without forcing the image.
We leaned into warm tones to reflect memory and nostalgia, while keeping skin tones grounded and natural.
The grade was less about transformation and more about subtle reinforcement of emotion.
WHY CANON R5 MARK II WORKED FOR THIS FILM
This wasn’t about pushing the camera to its limits.
It was about whether it could stay invisible while the story took center stage.
In that sense, the Canon R5 Mark II proved to be a reliable partner.
At POSTCARD FROM MOON, we believe technology should always serve the story.
Whether it’s a large-scale production or an intimate narrative, the goal remains the same—creating films that connect.
